The Internet of Things (IoT): Identity Theft

Identity theft occurs when someone wrongfully obtains your personal data in a way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain. This is called Social Engineering.

Social Engineering is different from hacking.

How? You might be tricked into giving personal information over the internet, for instance, a thief might trick you into revealing account information.

That’s why it’s important to guard your personal that’s data accessed through your computer, smart phone, tablet and mobile devices.

Here are a few easy, but important, things you can do to keep the criminals at bay.

  • Check your firewall settings

  • Make sure you regularly update anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-phishing software

  • Enforce password / passphrase policy

  • Consider a VPN which is especially useful when accessing the Internet on public Wi-Fi.
